Shining Genesect (ひかるゲノセクト) doesn’t sit in the same rarity conversation as a modern AR or UR pull. It printed in 2017, when Shining was a special mark in the Japanese Sun & Moon series, and the official card database shows a Shining-star icon instead of a letter, so the terminology, release timeline and grading context all differ from a current-era chase card.
The card is number 010/072 from 強化拡張パック「ひかる伝説」 (Shining Legends, SM3+).
Shining Genesect is card 010/072 from Shining Legends (SM3+), a Japanese enhanced expansion pack released 15 July 2017 — almost three months ahead of its 6 October 2017 English release. It carries the Shining icon, not an AR/SR/SAR/UR mark. It is offered as a PSA 10 back order at ¥26,520 (~$172) — sourced to order; the product page shows the current terms (back orders) — and a physical PSA 10 slab is listed at ¥27,040 (~$176).

Shining Legends (SM3+): The Set Behind the Card
The official Japanese product page describes 強化拡張パック「ひかる伝説」 as the third enhanced expansion pack of the Sun & Moon series, released on 15 July 2017 at ¥230 plus tax per pack, with 6 cards per pack, one of them a holo (キラ) card. It also prints a campaign line offering a special shiny Ho-Oh for a 20-pack box purchase. The English Shining Legends reached pokemon.com’s release date of October 06, 2017, with the note that its booster packs would not be sold separately.
Only the denominator 072 is official on the Japanese side: the card is printed “010/072”, and the official pages print no total card count for the set. The English page says “Over 70 cards” with “6 Shining Pokémon”, 4 new Pokémon-GX and 3 new full-art cards; Limitless TCG’s header lists 78 cards for the English set.
For the set breakdown, see our Shining Legends (SM3+) set guide.
What “Shining” Actually Means (And Why It Isn’t an AR or UR)
“Shining” is not an AR, SR, SAR or UR code. In the official database the eight Shining cards of this set carry the Shining-star icon and no letter. Per Bulbapedia (archived snapshot), Shining Pokémon first appeared as secret cards in Neo Revelation, and the Japanese Shining Legends subset introduced a new rarity symbol for them, a foil blue and yellow eight-pointed star.
The English set page says Shining Pokémon “have finally returned to the Pokémon TCG after a long absence”. Because the Shining mark is its own classification, there is no accurate way to translate it into an AR/SR/SAR/UR equivalent.
One wrinkle: catalogues label this card inconsistently. SNKRDUNK and our own listings write “H” as shorthand, but H is not an official rarity letter; the official mark is the Shining-star icon. Limitless TCG’s English page for the card shows “Holo Rare”, which is Limitless’s own label for the English print.
The mechanic did not end with Shining Legends. The official database also lists ひかるホウオウ (SM-P 083, the box-purchase campaign promo), ひかるコイキング (S8a-P 010/025, offered as a PSA 10 back order at ¥24,174 (~$157)) and ひかるセレビィ (M6a 141/103). Our Shining Pokemon cards guide, Shining Magikarp 010/025 guide and Shining Celebi 141/103 guide cover those. If you’re tracking Genesect across its printings, the Genesect card guide covers the Japanese prints.
Shining Genesect and the Other Shining Cards: Asking Prices
The set’s eight Shining cards, with the lowest SNKRDUNK asks on October 5, 2026 and our PSA 10 back-order prices for the same numbers:
| Card | Number | Lowest raw ask | PSA 10 ask | Ours (PSA 10 back order) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ひかるゲノセクト (Genesect) | 010/072 | no raw ask seen | ¥26,000 (~$169) | ¥26,520 (~$172) |
(Volcanion) | 028/072 | ¥3,200 (~$21) | ¥15,999 (~$104) | ¥16,319 (~$106) |
Genesect’s own SNKRDUNK listing shows only a PSA 10 ask, so no raw price is printed for it. The raw figure for the other cards is the lowest ask among condition grades A to D on that listing.
The official database credits Hitoshi Ariga for Genesect, Volcanion and Lugia, Sanosuke Sakuma for Celebi and Mew, Shigenori Negishi for Jirachi, Naoki Saito for Rayquaza and Kouki Saitou for Arceus. On the English side, per an archived Bulbapedia list, Volcanion, Mew, Jirachi, Rayquaza and Arceus are numbered 27, 40, 42, 56 and 57 of 73 in Shining Legends, while Celebi and Lugia went to the SM Black Star Promos (SM79 and SM82) and are not in the English set. The English set therefore carries six Shining Pokémon against eight on the Japanese list.
PSA 10 Shining Genesect: Current Listing
A PSA 10 Shining Genesect is offered as a back order at ¥26,520 (~$172), and a physical PSA 10 slab of the same card is listed at ¥27,040 (~$176). PSA 10 designates Gem Mint condition per PSA’s published grading standards.
Genesect has a long print history: the official database lists many cards with Genesect in the name, from Megalo Cannon to Black Bolt. PSA 10 back orders are offered for several of them, including Genesect [BW-P 231] at ¥71,400 (~$464), Genesect [CP5 029/036] at ¥30,599 (~$199) and Genesect ex SR [SV11B 164/086] at ¥4,590 (~$30); the Genesect ex guide covers the newer prints.
The set’s non-Shining chase cards are offered as PSA 10 back orders as well: Mewtwo GX HR [SM3+ 080/072] at ¥214,200 (~$1,391), Mewtwo GX SR [075/072] at ¥87,720 (~$570) and Zoroark GX HR [081/072] at ¥48,450 (~$315). The Mewtwo GX card guide covers the Mewtwo prints.
Shining Legends vs Shining Fates: Don’t Mix Them Up
The “Shining” name shows up on two different products. Shining Legends (SM3+) is the 2017 set that introduced this Shining Genesect print. Shining Fates is a separate release with its own card list; it is not the same set despite the shared branding.
For the other set, our Shining Fates Japanese card list covers it. Don’t assume prices or rarity terms carry over between the two.
How Shining Legends Compares to Modern Rarity Tiers
Current Japanese sets classify their chase cards under AR, SR, SAR and UR. Shining Genesect carries the older Shining icon instead, even though the same set also prints higher-numbered cards that our listings label SR and HR, such as Mewtwo GX SR 075/072 and Zoroark GX HR 081/072. Three cards from the current system show the contrast:
Mew ex is offered as a PSA 10 back order at ¥16,618 (~$108) and Pikachu ex at ¥13,526 (~$88); a physical PSA 10 Galarian Zapdos V is listed at ¥16,640 (~$108). The Shining mark is its own classification, and “Shining” is the correct term when identifying or listing this card. For how Japanese rarity codes work in current sets, see our Japanese Pokemon card rarity guide for graded buyers. For what PSA 10 and the surrounding grades mean, see the Japanese Pokemon card grading guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Shining Genesect an AR or UR card?
No. It is a 2017 Shining print from Shining Legends (SM3+), marked in the official database with the Shining-star icon rather than a letter. AR, SR, SAR and UR are separate rarity marks, and this card is not classified under them. H is only shorthand used by some catalogues.
What is Shining Legends (SM3+)?
Shining Legends is the Japanese enhanced expansion pack released 15 July 2017, almost three months before its English release on October 6, 2017. Shining Genesect is card 010/072, numbered out of 072; the official pages do not state a total card count for the set.
Is Shining Legends the same set as Shining Fates?
No. They are separate products despite the similar Shining branding. Shining Legends is the 2017 SM3+ Japanese set this card comes from; Shining Fates is a distinct release with its own card list, covered in our Shining Fates Japanese card list.
What does PSA 10 mean for this card?
PSA 10 designates Gem Mint condition per PSA’s published grading standards. For Shining Genesect, a PSA 10 back order is offered and a physical PSA 10 slab is listed in the store. The back order is sourced to order and its product page shows the current terms, while the slab is a physical copy of the same card, 010/072.
How much does a PSA 10 Shining Genesect cost?
As of October 5, 2026, the back order is ¥26,520 (~$172) and the physical slab ¥27,040 (~$176). SNKRDUNK’s lowest PSA 10 ask on that date was ¥26,000 (~$169), and it showed no raw ask. Those are asking prices, not sales, so they sit beside the store prices for comparison only.
Does Shining Genesect have an English print?
Yes. pokemon.com lists Shining Genesect as Shining Legends 9/73, Rare Holo, illustrated by Hitoshi Ariga, from the English set released October 06, 2017. The Japanese number is 010/072, so match prints by name and set rather than by collector number.
